KnowledgeTree 2.0.0 and beyond
06 Feb 2005
Woo, after five public release candidates, KnowledgeTree 2.0.0 is out. It's been a great experience over the past three months working with the community, integrating patches and new functionality, and working on bug reports and feature requests. It's really fun! I wish it were what I'll be doing for the next three months, but I'll be focusing on other aspects of KnowledgeTree at Jam.
Part of the reason I'm really excited with 2.0.0 is that I've been able to reduce the amount of code and replace most bad aspects of the inherited code - now it's database-portable, using prepared statements, needs less configuration, deals with different PHP environment settings, and so forth.
It's just a beginning, but now I feel confident that I can push it into a few places where it couldn't go before. I guess now is where I should start pushing at government and parastatal usage, hospitals, universities, and so forth. These offer the best opportunity for not only support contracts, but contracts to add new features.
I'll be working on a commercial add-on for KnowledgeTree that provides an alternate interface (can't spill too much of what it does...). It includes some work in C# (using VS.net), which should be an interesting (if potentially maddening) experience.
