As components, Alexander is an excellent movie. The acting is great, the backdrops are inspiring, the story is enticing. Each scene is well-polished (although the battles were occasionally a bit too jerky). But the composition leaves something lacking to me, in terms of what's been left out and the hopping back in time to show something that didn't need to be placed out of order.
I hated this movie. The only bit I enjoyed was lisening to everyone get uncomfortable during the man on man love solioquy. It was too long, didn't stick to the known truth much and had a plot even the directors of pulp fiction would have trouble following.
I haven't seen it. But I heard the only highlights in the movie was those in Colin's Hair. I'll watch before I say more stuff about it.
Jean, I think you explained what I thought was lacking a lot better than I did. Thanks! The scenes were great as components, but there was no glue (context) between them, and we end up not really knowing what the point of the whole movie is (motivation). Neil
Yea. Did anyone else notice the movie seemed to be a metaphor for US foreign policy? the eagle following Alexander around all the time. The overt homosexuality seemed to me to be an allusion to the current administration's stance against the lifestyle. What is interesting is anthony hopkins in his speach saying "we must kill the dreamers before they wear us all out" advocating getting rid of our current neocon president who's "dream" of the "freedom on the march" perhaps is seen as being destructive to us all. Was I the only one who noticed this?
I have seen this movie, I really liked this movie very much. There are some shortcomings too, as they tried to present "great Alexander" as a "Gay", I think which is absolutely rubbish, He was a Great Warrior. I am from India, although he tried to conquer India and later he was defeated in India but even then Indian people still have a lot of respect for this great warrior. When I was very young I watched a hindi movie on "Alexander" and that movie left a lot of impressions on my mind. Alexander is a source of inspiration for me. I have achieved a lot in my life, that is because of only that old hindi movie Alexander. This movie is good but should try to show this great man of the world as a Gay. Jatinda
I don't know, Jatinda: Alexander being at least bisexual seems a very common belief amongst scholars based on available material, so you can't blame a mere film-maker for going along with what scholars believe. Certainly, the activities displayed in the movie seem accurate for the time period. Equating the pederasty of the time with the mutually-consensual gay relationships of today is a stretch, though.
