I was at TSF's building again tonight, for discussion on the formation of the School's Linux Users' Group, which aims to promote volunteerism to drive teaching students and teachers to use their school Linux labs, which have been and will be installed by SLUG. I took minutes again, attached.

Hi all,

Here's an outline of what went on tonight at the meeting:

It was decided that SLUG should become a legal entity, so that bank
accounts could be opened in its name and be managed independently from
individuals in the group, and for managing donations to the group. This
would also remove liability from the members of the group.

The Western Cape Linux Users' Group constitution was examined, and it
was agreed that it would serve as a foundation for the group's
constitution. Several changes were suggested in the group, and it was
agreed the updated constitution would be emailed to the mailing list for
comment. (Actions: TB, NBM)

A first draft at a mission statement was created:

The mission of the group is to create a self-sustaining
loose-knit support structure for Linux labs within South African
        schools.

This mission statement is to be commented upon on the mailing list.

A first draft of the objectives of the group was decided:

1. Installation of Linux labs at schools
2. Technical support of Linux labs
3. Promotion of an ethic of volunteerism
4. Support for curriculum development
5. Maintaining software recommendations for the labs
6. Liaise with press, public, and organisations about the group's
activities
7. Training and development of the group's members, as well as of the
students and teachers using the Linux labs
8. Liaising with organisations w.r.t. donations and sponsorships

A calendar guideline was created:

1. For the next week (until end of Thursday 6 November), the
constitution will be discussed on the mailing list
2. An AGM date will be finalised in the next week
3. From Friday 7 November until end of Thursday 13 November,
nominations will be accepted for the committee
4. The AGM is tentatively scheduled for Saturday 15 November
5. The newly-formed committee will meet within two weeks of the AGM

The meeting closed.

...

I suggest people who were there send me their names for the roll-call on
the minutes.

Cheers,

Neil
