An incredibly (personally) rewarding meeting was held this morning at Africa Source, entitled Social Sourceforge. At the core of the discussion is how we can connect NGOs and civil society organisations (especially in Africa) with open source software and developers. Specifically, reducing reimplementation of common requirements for NGOs by collecting information about open source software already in use by NGOs to solve specific problems, and providing an organisation that NGOs could contact to use this knowledge and receive advice. Also, collecting unsolved requirements from NGOs to create a task list for volunteer open source developers, but also for companies to bid on solving a problem, providing the result as open source software. With the help of Kim Tucker from CSIR Open Source Centre, we mapped the processes and requirements for solving this problem. There'll be continued discussion during the conference and thereafter.
