If you're pretty new to the whole Wii vs. PS3 vs. XBox 360 debate, there's a pretty gentle explanation to why the Wii is doing unexpectedly well in this early stage of this generation of games consoles, called An Underdog Story: How the Wii Became Number One, mainly at Sony's expense.

I think the explanation seriously underplays two areas.   Firstly, that the Wii is probably doing so well because it delivered something unexpected - a feeling of something new and something fun.  And secondly, the impact of the positive word-of-mouth and collective dreaming about what it would be like to have such a new and exciting interface into games - both in terms of playing games, but also getting people thinking about new sorts of games that would be possible.

Of course, none of this is good for me.  It's hard enough living in a backwater that hasn't got a functioning distributor (yet), but the continued success of the Wii means it's hard to import them, as few consoles spend long on the shelves of the country they were distributed to...

According to Ninty, a delegation of Nintendo high-ups are going to be visiting SA - one can only assume to do something about the distributorship locally.

Good on them (if that's the case) - the Wii is going down famously elsewhere in the world, and a well-priced Wii might do exceedingly well here - where a R6k+ PS3 is likely to be above what even the most distant parent who wants to buy their kids' love or quietness is willing to pay.

Oh happy days - it seems that while the standard consoles are not in stock, a GameCube bundle with Mario Kart: Double Dash is now available. I also note the best games store in the country has a Platinum GameCube and Resident Evil 4 bundle that they import.

Another reason I've been away for the past two weeks is that Jeremy bought me Tales of Symphonia, which has gulped a lot of my free time. It has a useful game-time feature, that counts only the time that's gone into the saved games, meaning failures and backtracking time is dropped. This claim I've been playing over seven hours now. That means I'm less than 10% of the way through the 80 hours of gameplay available (and on top of that I usually play slowly). So far, I can't fault the game except for not having a way to skip over scenes you've seen before (although you can speed them up), and the placing of long scenes before someplace you're surely going to die a few times. The graphics is beautiful, the music and sound can't be faulted, and the gameplay is speedily-paced. I'll have more once I get further.

While I'm waiting for a CVS diff from sourceforge, might as well give my review of Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker - one of the top reasons to get a GameCube.

Almost two weeks. Some of that has been because I've been working hard on KnowledgeTree. But most of it has been because Johann finally convinced me to get a Nintendo GameCube. Between Soul Calibur II and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, my PC would be lonely if Jeremy weren't playing Sims II on it. And, lately, our puppy has arrived.
