Wangthai

Jeremy and I decided to go out for supper tonight, and after a lot of checking of online and deadtree restaurant guides to no avail, we decided to go to Wangthai in Constantia. I'd give it 8/10 - good food, excellent service, nice setting, and reasonable price.

Jeremy and I followed the Style Restaurant Guide recommendation to try the Spinach Cones, and Style is justified. A bit unwieldy and testing for the first two cones, and then you have a good idea of which of the ingredients presented to you to put together in your cone.

I chose the Tukula Chenin Blanc 2001. The Tukulu farm is located in Darling (near Cape Town), and is 51% owned by black entrepreneurs, the farm workers, and members of the community. The wine itself is bold - full-bodied with lime (or melon, apparently) on the palate.

Continuing my interest in vegetarian dishes, I was happy to see the variety of vegetarian options all grouped together near the front, and even more happy by the vegetarian dish (called "eight" something) which combined various noodles, mushrooms, tofu, along with the usual vegetables.

Jeremy had a chicken stirfry with basil and chillis. I never got to taste the basil, but apparently it was good accompaniment to the dish. Minor warning for chilli wimps (like me) - it was a bit on the hot side for me, even though Jeremy ordered the medium.

We finished up with deserts. Jeremy had a trio of sorbets. We didn't think much of the blackcurrant, but the litchi was excellent and smooth. Minor ice crystals, but forgivable. I had fried banana with ice cream, which was good, but I wished I was a little more adventurous. Or that I'd not had it - was already full.

R250 for all that and coffee and the tip, so entirely reasonable. Since the restaurant is so close, I'm sure we'll be heading back there again when we're not feeling to impoverished to go out.
