Summary

Finished my woodworking class and the woodworking parts of the tray I made during it (still needs some additional finish steps). Had a run of poor sleep and a sore knee, so rested up. Prepared for the mini-vacation we planned next week near Stanwood.

I came across Gina Trapani’s My Life in Weeks, which led me down a bit of a rabbit hole of people doing this sort of exercise, with most recent popularization via Wait But Why’s “Your Life in Weeks” post and via neo-“stoic” “Memento Mori” calendars.

But it’s not algorithmic ranking per se that’s bad—it’s just that the algorithms you’re used to don’t care about your goals. That might be an inevitable consequence of “enshittification”, but the solution isn’t to avoid all algorithms, but just to avoid algorithms you can’t control. … I think the solution is to embrace algorithmic ranking, but insist on “control”—to insist that the algorithm serves your goals and not someone else’s.
